Fall photoshoots, Thanksgiving gatherings, Christmas cards… finding your perfect outfit for an occasion can be challenging. Finding outfits for everyone in your family can be STRESSFUL. I love putting together looks for my own family and in this blog post I’m going to show you my process of how I do that.
THE COLOR PALETTE
I think about what colors I love at the moment. I also ask myself this:
-What colors are most flattering on us?
-What colors are do I want to see in the picture? (photoshoot or if you take a picture at the occasion)
If you’re doing a photoshoot and know where the location will be, try to do something that compliments the space. For example, white always looks great if you’re taking pictures on the beach because the white pops beautifully against the blue ocean and sky and usually has the effect of making you look extra tan!
Next, think about what tones you want to incorporate: warm, cool, or neutral. Or maybe a mix!
THE VIBE
I see this a lot with couples. There’s usually always one person who knows EXACTLY what their style is and the other person is along for the ride. Try to play off your partner’s style! You should both be wearing something of the same “collection”. Classic, boho, modern, rustic, eclectic… y’all should look like cohesive but not too matchy. For example, I wouldn’t both wear flannels shirts for fall pictures. Instead, maybe one in a flannel and the other in a sweater: both classic vibes but not the same type of piece.
THE TRIFECTA: SOLID+PRINT+TEXTURE
My favorite part! Having these 3 elements- solid, print, and texture is a simple way to create a cohesive, effortless look that is dimensional. Once you know the color scheme and vibe, I like to pick one outfit and use that outfit to guide the other looks. For example, I chose this print dress for our fall pictures.
This dress is a bold print with warm tones. I’d say the vibe is boho. For my husband, I chose a solid warm toned corduroy shirt. Now a button is usually pretty classic but this one has a corduroy texture to keep it laid back and I also ordered these men’s boots to really give the look more of a boho edge.
For my baby boy, I decided to put him in a texture and something lighter to brighten up the collective look. I chose this precious knit for him to wear.
I didn’t want to put him in jeans like his dad but that would be an okay choice. However, to keep the vibe cohesive, I chose these rust overalls. Very boho! The warm tones play off of my dress.
THE ACCENT PIECE(S)
For this specific family look, I felt that my dress was pretty bold and that we didn’t need much else. However, I wanted to break up our color palette JUST a tad so I ordered these olive boots for baby boy. Still warm toned but it’s an accent since it’s not part of our color palette but is a compliment to it! If your looks are more simple, adding a felt hat, a belt, or a fun shoe can help make the overall look more unique.
IN YOUR CLOSET
What is already in your closet that can complete the look? Clothes are meant to be worn multiple times. It’s good for the environment and better for the wallet! That is why it’s great to invest in quality staple pieces that last for years and work for all seasons. I already have tan booties to pair with my dress. My husband has dark jeans, a great staple piece, that he’s used time and time again for our photoshoots.
And here is our family look on a mood board. I’m such a visual person and putting the look together before I order pieces, helps me make sure it is exactly what I want. I hope this post helps guide you the next time you need to put together a family look!
